Yogi Berra On ACL Recovery

Black Belt Mama, another ACL recoveree, is scheduled to head back to class in two weeks, if she doesn't die first from poison ivy. As with all ACL-reconstructed martial artists, she's nervous about getting back onto the mat.

Michele, who teaches Okinawa Kenpo Karate and Kobudo, has had her own worries about her reconstructed ACL.

I personally think my knee, overall, will never be the same; however, I also think my ACL itself is strong and fairly risk free. But there is doubt in my mind as well.

I've decided that, as with so many things, Yogi Berra (would have) said it best: Getting back on the mat after ACL surgery "is 90% mental -- the other half is physical."

Right now, dying from poison ivy and the subsequent hives seems more likely to happen, than me heading back to class.

I'm so not ready on so many levels.

I figure things could be much worse--we could be professional athletes!

My dear BBM, I read the post on your blog and I think you're experiencing one of the low points and projecting it out forever. Your knee will get better. I'm sure you will return.

Paula, thanks, it's good to be working out more often.

Hey, Hack, I was just reading what boxer Floyd Mayweather, best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, wants to do in the future, and it's... sit behind a computer!

I agree with Bob, I was just released from my second knee surgery (different knee, not reoccurence) and I can attest that both of my reconstructed ACL knees are better, stronger and faster now.

We all know the recovery process is hard, the hardest part is the constant mental battle. Keep working to get that knee strong and your mind will follow!

Hi, Wendy, thanks. Oh, yes, I can see how a rugby player might need a reconstructed ACL from time to time!

HI there, I am a 28 year old woman who also does MMA. Back in December I went to Thailand to train for three months and fight, unfortunately, I tore my ACL, had surgery in March, and have been healing. I've read through all your blogs, and I know I will not be able to get back to training till January, but all I want to know is, how is your piveting feeling? How long did you have to wait to get back to muay thai or just standup? Email me anytime, yasi79@aol.com

I'll email you, yasi, but my pivoting is pretty good--the biggest problem there is psychological rather than physical, I think.
