Back From Hawaii

Our trip to Hawaii was great--very restorative, a real chance for my wife and me to reconnect.

The photo above is taken at a black-sand beach on the big island of Hawaii. I'm eyeing one of the big green (endangered) sea turtles resting on the beach there. (They don't look green in the air; for some reason, they look green underwater!)

I've added a link to yet another martial artist who's undergone ACL surgery, and in my absence I've gotten comments from others who have undergone or are undergoing the surgery. I know we've got a self-selecting group here, but it does feel like ACL damage is epidemic in the martial arts!

  3. Looks really nice. Did you say hi to BJ Penn in Hilo? :)

  4. No; my wife is very supportive of my martial arts, but not remotely interested herself, and this was a trip to spend time together. (Not that BJ Penn would have any interest in meeting me anyway....)

I did find in a place called Hana Hou, the southernmost restaurant in the U.S., signed pictures of two martial artists: Felix "Tito" Trinidad, the boxer, and one of the Gracies (I'm sorry I forget which one!), who teaches in Hawaii.

The Gracie picture was signed: "Hana Hou: You're Next."

  5. :) I was kidding. My wife, while supportive, is also not remotely interested. I meant for that to be tongue in cheek! Sounds like a terrific time. I'd LOVE to take my wife somewhere. I'm hoping to do something nice for our 15th anniversary coming up. With a baby on the way, I'm going to have to plan well ahead of time.

Take care, and I'm very interested in how your knee handles a return to grappling.

  6. Oh, and if I'm not mistaken, it's a Relson Gracie school, but I might be wrong on that.
